A Cape Coral home usually has more than furniture and boxes to deal with before a move. The garage, the lanai and the pool equipment area tend to hold pool chemicals, a grill's propane tank, half-used paint and fuel for the boat or the mower. These are the things that should not be packed in a box and loaded with everything else. This guide covers what to set aside, why it matters and where Cape Coral residents can take what they do not plan to keep.
Which household items should stay off the moving truck?
Anything flammable, corrosive or under pressure. The City of Cape Coral's household hazardous waste page lists the typical items:
- pool chemicals
- gas and propane tanks
- liquid paint and paint thinners
- pesticides and herbicides
- drain cleaners
- automotive oil and car or boat batteries
Treat these as items you handle yourself unless the mover tells you otherwise at the estimate. A sealed box in a closed truck is the wrong place for a leaking jug of pool shock or a gas can.
Why does it matter if a box of chemicals is mixed in with the rest?
Because a spill can damage everything packed around it, and it can affect who pays for that damage. The federal moving booklet, Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, lists packing perishable, dangerous or hazardous materials without the mover's knowledge as one of the things that can limit or reduce a mover's liability for loss or damage. For moves that cross state lines, it also says federal law forbids shipping hazardous materials in household goods boxes without telling your mover.
The simple rule for any move, local or long distance: if you are not sure about an item, point it out during the walkthrough rather than taping it into a box.
Where can Cape Coral residents drop off pool chemicals, paint and propane tanks?
At Lee County's permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility on Topaz Court in Fort Myers. The City of Cape Coral lists its hours as Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month, 8:00 a.m. to noon. Lee County Hazardous Waste can answer questions at 239-533-8000.
The City also says it hosts household chemical waste collection events for residents, typically on the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in November. If your move is coming up this month, check the City's page for the current date before you plan around it.
Can you take them to the Cape Coral bulk waste drop-off instead?
No. The City's bulk waste drop-off page says household chemical waste, paints and liquids are not accepted at the City's drop-off site. It does take bulky household items such as furniture, mattresses and broken-down packing boxes, and it is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proof of residency may be required. That makes it useful for the furniture you are not bringing, but not for the garage shelf.
What should you do with the items you want to keep?
Plan to carry them yourself, upright and sealed in their original containers, or use them up before moving day. A few practical steps:
- Stop buying pool chemicals, paint and lawn products a few weeks before the move.
- Run the mower and other small engines low on fuel before they are loaded.
- Keep a separate corner of the garage for items that are not going on the truck, so nobody packs them by mistake.
- Mention the grill, pool equipment and anything with a fuel tank when you talk through the move.
How does a packing crew handle the rest of the garage and lanai?
Once the hazardous items are set aside, the rest of the garage and outdoor space can be packed like any other room. On our Cape Coral page we suggest walking the lanai and garage with the owner at the estimate and pointing out patio sets, tool chests and anything that has to fit through a side gate. With full packing and unpacking, our crew boxes the household and wraps furniture in quilted pads and shrink wrap before anything is loaded.
