Moving tips from our Fort Myers crews
These are the things we wish every customer knew a few weeks before moving day. Start with a list, and call us with any question.
Make a list first
Write down what has to happen before the move and after it. Before: book the estimate, ask your building or HOA about moving hours and parking, and decide what is not coming. After: utilities, mail, and the room you want unpacked first. Keep the list in one place, on paper or on your phone, and have it with you when we come for the estimate.
Get the estimate early
Walk the house before we come, including closets, the garage and the lanai. Note the big pieces, the fragile ones and anything that stays with the house. Tell us about gates, elevators, stairs and where a truck can park at both homes. The walkthrough only takes 10 to 15 minutes. Open the closets and show us the attic, because the more we see, the closer the flat price fits the job.
Use the right boxes
Good materials keep things from breaking. Wardrobe boxes are the easiest way to move clothes, and they hold a lot. Fill every box all the way so nothing shifts inside it, and use plenty of acid-free paper around dishes and glass. A half-empty box gets crushed, and a loose plate breaks. If you would rather not pack at all, our crew can pack the whole house.
Label by the room you are moving into
Write the room at the new house on each box, plus a few words on what is inside. If the new place has fewer rooms, label for the new layout, not the old one. Pack one bag that rides with you in the car: medication, important papers, keys, chargers and a change of clothes. That bag saves you opening ten boxes on the first night.
Decide what is coming before you pack
Measure the big furniture and the new rooms. Then sort things into four groups: keep, donate, consign and throw out. Settle family keepsakes early, while there is still time to talk about them. We can help you work out which furniture fits the new room, and take the rest to donation, consignment or disposal during the move. See our downsizing help.
Ask your mover
If you are not sure how to pack something, ask us before you buy supplies or take anything apart. That goes double for a piano, a grandfather clock or an antique, which we handle all the time. On moving day, check every drawer, closet, cabinet and the garage once more before the truck pulls away. Keep keys and gate codes for the new home in your bag.
Before you book any mover, read how to check that a Florida mover is registered and which household items to keep off the truck.
